Cornea & Conjunctiva
The conjunctiva and cornea provide essential protective functions for ocular health. These two structures can be the site of various pathologies affecting vision and comfort.
Conjunctival Pathologies
The conjunctiva is a thin membrane covering the inner surface of the eyelids, exposed to irritants and infections.
Conjunctivitis
Frequent inflammation, it can be of viral, bacterial or allergic origin. Symptoms include redness, itching and discharge.
Pterygium
Benign fibrovascular proliferation invading the cornea, associated with UV exposure. It can cause aesthetic problems, visual disturbances (astigmatism) or frequent irritations.
Subconjunctival hemorrhage
Sudden red patch due to rupture of a blood vessel. Usually benign, an examination is necessary to identify underlying causes such as uncontrolled hypertension.
Corneal pathologies
The cornea, essential for refraction of light, can be damaged by infections, trauma or degenerative diseases.
Keratitis
Corneal inflammation of bacterial, viral or fungal origin, causing pain, photosensitivity and loss of vision. Contact lenses represent a significant risk factor.
Keratoconus
Progressive deformation of the cornea which becomes thinner and takes on a conical shape. It can be treated with specialized lenses and corneal cross-linking.
Corneal dystrophies
Hereditary conditions causing opacity or structural changes in the cornea, including Fuchs dystrophy.
Corneal ulcer
Loss of corneal tissue of infectious or autoimmune origin requiring rapid treatment to avoid permanent scarring.
Foreign body
Foreign bodies embedded in the cornea (particularly metallic) cause rapid rust formation and require urgent ophthalmological intervention.
Important: An ophthalmological examination using a slit lamp is essential for any precise diagnosis. A local corticosteroid should never be instilled into the eye without prior ophthalmological consultation.
